About Orient Name

Last updated: 25 October 2026

Orient Name gives Chinese names to people who did not grow up with Chinese. Not a translation of your Western name — a name chosen in Chinese, for meaning, for sound, and for the way it sits next to your family name.

Who runs this

Orient Name is built and run by one independent developer, working online from China. There is no company behind it, no investors, no advertising and no data resale. The site has been live since October 2026.

We were previously called Chinese Name Studio. The name changed; the data, the scoring engine and the person behind it did not. Pages, receipts and emails from before October 2026 may still carry the old name.

How a name is chosen here

  1. Meaning. Every character has a documented sense used in names — not the first dictionary gloss. Where a simplified character merged two older ones (松 the pine vs 鬆 loose), we say which one the name uses and show the source line.
  2. Sound. Tone pattern, and the homophone traps that make a beautiful name an unfortunate one in daily speech. We check candidates against 621 documented sound-alike hazards, classed as insult, disease, vulgar or body.
  3. Structure. Stroke balance and the visual shape of the three characters together.
  4. Chart. If you give a birth date, time and place, the name is scored against the traditional Four Pillars reading. This layer is optional and it is an add-on, not the product.

How to check us

The character pages are the place to start: pick a character, read the quotations, and check them yourself — browse all characters. Every sense and every quotation behind those pages is published as The Chinese Name Corpus (CC BY 4.0), so you can check them without taking our word for it. If a line is wrong, write to [email protected] and it will be corrected or removed. Corrections are worth more to us than compliments.
