Integrity that holds when the season turns
岁寒，然后知松柏之后凋也。

The tree is the vehicle, not the point: what is being named is the thing that is still standing when everyone else has gone.
这句写的是树，落点在人：众芳都谢了，它还在——名字里的「松」取的就是这一层。
少年终成栋梁
Still growing, and nobody has noticed yet
新松恨不高千尺，恶竹应须斩万竿。
I wish the young pines would grow a thousand feet at once — and the bad bamboo should be cut back by the ten thousand.

The pines are the ones he planted himself, and he is impatient for them to be tall. A name that uses 松 is a wish about a height that has not arrived yet.
「新松」是他亲手种下的幼松，恨它长得不够快；下一句紧接着说杂竹该砍。一句里同时有护持与取舍——名字里的「松」，许的正是这份「将来要比现在高」。
孤直不媚
Straight, and not flowering to please
松柏本孤直，难为桃李颜。
The pine and the cypress are straight and stand alone; they cannot put on the face of peach and plum.

Peach and plum have blossoms; pine and cypress do not. Not flowering is put forward here as a character, not as a lack.
桃李有花，松柏没有。李白把「不开花」写成一种品格：不肯为了被喜欢而开花。
长寿与荫庇
Long life, and what outlasts you
如松柏之茂，无不尔或承。
May you flourish like the pine and the cypress — and may everything you have be carried on by those who come after.

「松柏之茂」是先秦祝寿辞，取常青不凋、子孙承继之义；今天寿匾上仍写这四个字。

此句为落成新居时所歌：竹言其根固，松言其叶茂——根扎得住，枝叶还长得开。
松风解带
The wind in the pines, and undoing the belt
松风吹解带，山月照弹琴。
The wind through the pines is enough to undo my belt; the mountain moon lights my lute.

To undo the belt under the pines is to stop holding yourself in. The name carries that too — not everything has to stay taut.
「解带」是松下宽衣的自在。名字里的「松」也有这一层：不必时刻绷着。
万壑松声
A sound with a valley in it
为我一挥手，如听万壑松。
He lifts his hand once for me, and I hear pines in ten thousand valleys.

The lute is heard as surf running through a whole range of hills. Here 松 is a measure of scale.
琴声被听成满山松涛。松在这里给的是「大」——这声音有山谷那么宽。
高洁清朗
Clear, and a little removed from the world
明月松间照，清泉石上流。
Moonlight falls between the pines; a clear spring runs over the stones.

Here 松 is a grove rather than one tree; this is the line that gives the character its quietness, not only its toughness.
