Learning is what makes it
Quick, fond of learning, and not ashamed to ask those beneath him — that is why he is called Wen.
· our translation
When Confucius explains the posthumous title 文, he does not say the man wrote well. He says he loved learning and was not ashamed to ask. That is the sense a name borrows.
Pattern held by substance
When pattern and substance are in balance, then you have a gentleman.
· our translation
Substance without pattern is raw; pattern without substance is装饰. 文 in a name is the balance, not the decoration.
A civilisation in full
The Zhou looked to the two dynasties before it — how rich and full its culture was!
· our translation
郁郁 describes things growing thick. At its largest, 文 is not writing but a civilisation's order and lustre.
In a name
Not "good at writing" but a formed mind — learning plus proportion.
