Where the light starts
暾将出兮东方，照吾槛兮扶桑。
The bright sun is about to rise in the east, lighting my railing from the fusang tree.

From the hymn to the sun god. 暾 is the newly risen sun. In Chinese, east is first of all where light begins, not a compass point.
《九歌·东君》是祭日神的歌。「暾」是初升的太阳；东方在汉语里首先不是一个方位，是光开始的地方。

西薄羊肠，东穷海只。
West it presses on the narrow pass; east it runs to the sea.
